You Don’t Want Hot Sauce- You Want Spicy Food

by Joshua Black

Going to talk about the purpose of your
marketing today.

Remember the old saying that the customer
doesn’t want a 1/4 inch drill bit, they
want 1/4 inch holes?

Well, as over-used as this statement is,
it’s really important to remember the next
time you are creating a sales letter or
marketing piece for your product.

Ask this question to yourself:

What is the purpose of my product?

What is my product doing for the customer?

That is what you want to market, the benefit
not the product itself.

The customer does not want a bottle of hot
sauce, they want a spicy meal.

The customer does not want a landscaper, they
want a beautiful lawn and they want an expert
to take care of it form them,

The customer does not want an alarm system,
they want the feeling of safety and protection
for their family.

The customer does not want a sales trainer for
their company, they want a sales force that gets
more deals in less time.

Makes sense doesn’t it?

Next time you flip through a newspaper or watch
TV, look at the ads.

Did the company do a very good job of selling the
benefit instead of the product itself?

I bet some of them do an amazing job and many
more do a really lousy job.
