I’m gonna play devil’s advocate today. Since
I use social media as one of my marketing tools.
I want to make one disclaimer: I am in no way
any kind of social media expert.
In fact, I welcome any and all suggestions for
improvement. With that out of the way, I will
pose a question to you…
How much time do you spend friend-ing, tweeting,
hooting, honking, and farting your way to more
customers through social media sites versus
the amount of return you get back for your
efforts?
I mean it all about the ROI right?
Sometimes it seems like people have jumped on
the social bandwagon so much it’s as if they
don’t believe in fundamental marketing at all.
Well here’s the rub…
If you don’t have a way to turn that friend,
contact, buddy, whatever into a customer after
you have hooted and honked your way into their
life, then you are wasting your time, period.
You can waste a huge chunk of your day updating
your pictures and creating little witty quotes,
but when you are done, have you really
accomplished anything?
Also, are you giving your customer too big of
a glimpse into your personal life?
I’ve got some professional Facebook friends that
have some pretty INTERESTING images on their sites,
and maybe just maybe your customers might not
want to see some of that… just a suggestion.
On the flipside, social media is fantastic if
you use your super powers for good instead of evil.
It’s all about relationships and relationship
building is the best way you can sell more stuff
to your customers.
For example, check out the Underdog Sales Bible:

Here is the guide for ethical selling through
the use of building relationships with your
customers.
Once you become a friend to your customer, then
you a just suggesting ideas that will help them
in their daily lives.
That’s the relationship that I hope I have with
you. I want to introduce you to products that I
believe will really bring your business ahead of
the others in your industry, while still being
able to function on a small budget.
So what’s the takeaway?
I have not idea. I guess it’s this: If you want
to grow your business any time in the future,
not only do you have to have a web site, but you
need to partake in social media of some format.
…just don’t waste your time and don’t forget
about the fundamentals of marketing.
If I don’t talk to you tomorrow…
Have a great weekend,
Joshua Black
P.S. Really… you should check this out if you
want to close the loop and turn those social
contacts into buying customers:
