There is so much hype on the Internet and everywhere else that there might be a money-making opportunity. When you are trying to pursue a REAL business goal, sometimes it feels like you are are wasting your time, doesn’t it?
I mean, when you hear about all of the gurus and overnight success stories of people that make $10,000 just for breathing loud, or the lady that mailed just one letter and came up with a huge bag of money.
Of course we want to believe that instant riches are possible. After all, that’s the goal, isn’t it? Well, my point of today’s post is to dispel that myth about the overnight success stories and to bring us over to the question of why we are REALLY following our business passions.
First, I want to tell you a little story- When I was younger I was very interested in body-building. Now, by interested I mean that I read magazines with these hulking beasts on the cover, lifted weights a lot, ate a lot of magic milk shakes, and saw no results.
It wasn’t until much later I found out that those kind of physiques were not possible without the use of anabolic steroids. No matter how many gallons of muscle powder and how many weights I lifted, it was not physically possible for me to look like that unless I did a bunch of drugs.
Well, this is the fine-line between the overnight success B.S. and the real truth about making money in small business.
The truth is the part THEY aren’t telling you.
Sure, there are people that make $10,000/day operating small businesses from home. Some day I hope to be one of them too. However, the part they don’t tell you about in their sales page is that in order to get to the overnight success, they had to gain the knowledge to perfect their method for the past 23 years!
No one wants to hear the part about the business owner that had to sleep in his car just to keep his dream alive. We just want to hear about the people that make $500 for shaking someone’s hand.
No one wants to hear about the small business owner that had to work a 40 hour job and then deliver pizza at night for 10 years, just to launch her product on the shopping channel. We just want to hear about the blockbuster sales she made after having just one day on television.
That is what I am getting at…
NEVER believe anything you read that sounds too good to be true, even if I wrote it. There is probably a much more boring sob story behind the real success, but it’s a much better story, because it shows perseverance.
Now we come to the answer to the question in the headline above… so what is the one, sure-fire thing you can do to get rich?
You have to believe in your product, eat-sleep-breathe your product, be so insanely-passionate about your product that you don’t see failure as one of the choices.
The people that don’t make it to their goals decided to check the box that says “fail.”
The people that DO make it never even had that box on their application. That’s the difference.
It’s not about how quick you can make a buck or how many people you can fleece into buying your product. It’s about believing in something so passionately that you can’t get enough of it and you KNOW that it will work no matter what.

Great article Josh. You are completely right. One of the worst mistakes I see people make is waiting to find a get rich quick scheme instead of just getting to work.
Let me share my own story with you and your readers.
I started an online business in 2007 without ever realizing that I was creating a business. I certainly didn’t realize that my action in 2007 would change my life forever.
You see in 2007 I started a blog about Everquest II, an MMORPG that I was playing at the time. I was reading a lot of other blogs on MMORPGs and decided that I would create one too.
As this site progressed, I fell in love with blogging. I learned everything I could about this fascinating new medium and from there discovered Internet marketing, affiliate marketing and Google Adsense.
While continuing to write on my hobby blog, I started to create other websites to better my Internet marketing skills. I started with one site, got it up and running and then moved onto another one. By the end of 2008, I was making over $1,000 a month from these sites. By the end of 2009, I was making over $5,000 a month from an aggregate of about 100 sites – all in my spare time by the way.
After putting in the initial work of learning what to do and how to make money building websites, I systematized my business. Now, these sites run almost on autopilot. Every week I spend about an hour coming up with article ideas, and I outsource the writing and publishing to these websites to my virtual assistants.
The true lesson behind my story is that it took me three years to build this business, but through steady effort to earn more money, I found more and more ways to do it. Slowly, I kept building websites, learned more and more ways to make money online, and today keep looking for more ways.
Now, I write at Extra Income Daily with the goal of helping people to build multiple streams of income – side businesses, small businesses, online businesses and entrepreneurship generally. I want to help other people to build wealth, diversify their income and gain financial freedom. By just starting to build a business, people get their entrepreneur juices flowing. What you said above is SO true! I smile a little bit every time I get I get a piece of spam promising overnight riches. We are currently on year 5 of freedom from working for the man. It has been a ROUGH road and didn’t really start to pan out until about 15 months ago.
We don’t have the “fail” check box on our application. Can’t imagine ever loosing the freedom of working for ourselves. There is nothing like it in the world!
While we aren’t at $10,000 a day quite yet, we have been refining our system of being an affiliate over the last several years and have finally figured out what works for us. We have had some very good success (much more than we ever had working for the man), and within the next 12 months we should be at 6 figures a month.
It has been A LOT of hard work, let me tell you! There have been times when it would have been easier to give up and go back to the corporate life, but we couldn’t have lived with ourselves if we made that decision.
Being an online entrepreneur (or any other kind, for that matter) is a tough road to take, but it is very much worth it. And it isn’t all about the material things, but rather the complete freedom it brings. Financial freedom. Freedom from the man. And even emotional freedom. There is nothing like working for yourself!

It’s all about the system. If you can find a thing that works at a certain level, all you have to do is multiply it to make even more cash.

Great wisdom here Josh.
I have had a blog now for a couple of years, but it’s taken until now to understand how to monetise it properly. I’m not saying I’m making a fortune online, but certainly my wife and I are going away this month from the internet earnings.
My friend who is further down the internet marketing journey than I told me about the story of a guy who wrote a course on how to learn the piano. Apparently it sold poorly until a few days after Christmas when all the people who’d had a piano or keyboard for Christmas bought one. Apparently he made over $1m virtually ‘over night’.
The truth of course is that it took him months to earn this money, but certainly timing plays a big part in your success.

You have hit on a HUGE point here. There is a season for every product, even a day of the week that is the “sweet spot,” where it will sell the best. Just look at internet traffic, there is NOTHING going on at certain days of the week and then there are days where your bank account rings like a cash register… but you have to put in the time. Just like the 10,000 hour rule. You have to do something for 10,000 hours before you can even consider becoming an expert at something.
