The Dwight Schrute School of Small Business Passion

small business passion

by Joshua Black

As you may already know, one of my favorite
shows on the planet is The Office. Many a
night has been spent on the couch with my
fiancée, watching Dwight Schrute, the diligent
employee, bumble his way through the day.

I’d like to end this week with a few words
of encouragement, so I thought that I would
instill upon you a little more small business
wisdom that I learned from the man himself.

You see Dwight is a really passionate guy.
No matter how much people make fun of him
or try to get him to conform to something,
he sticks to his guns and keeps coming back
to work every day with his bizarro habits.

Good old Dwight Schrute is a beet farmer
outside of work.

Now, beets are gross and most people don’t
even think about beets as a food option in
a regular day, but to Dwight, beets are his
life.

In almost every episode, he is accosted for
his passion about his small business (beet
farm), yet he never changes his mind or goes
with the flow and gives up fighting for what
he really wants.

…which appears to be a happy farm kid
stuck in the life of a commuting worker-bee.

This is where is comes down to you and I.

We have a passion for our businesses. I’m
sure that there are plenty of people in your
life (maybe even your own customers) that
are not as big a believer as you are.

Maybe there have been people in your life
that said your idea will never work.

Perhaps they wanted you to “quit dreaming”
and “get a real job.”

…but you stuck with it.

Now you have a business.

Sometimes it gets REALLY tough and I know it.
Believe me, I know how tough it can get.

The thing you have to do is maintain that
passion.  Maintain that spark that started
the whole small business in the first place.

If you can keep that passion, it will show
through in your products and services. It
will be contagious to your customers.

…and most of all it will he keep your
business alive in the toughest of times.

If you are having a little trouble staying
passionate about your business, it might be
that you have a limiting belief that is holding
you back.

negative things that are keeping you from
getting to where you want to be, then you might

like Dwight!

Until Monday,

I agree with 95% of this post. Passion is the spark that started many of us on the road to owning and running our own businesses. In my opinion, staying passionate about your business is easy – making money at it isn’t so easy.

The 5% of your post I disagree with is that beets are not gross and many people do think about and enjoy beets as a regular food option. Unlike Dwight, beets aren’t my life, but I do enjoy them – regularly.

I converted my husband into a beet eater many years ago – maybe I can convert you?

Joshua Black

Hi Pat,

Fat chance on converting me to a beet eater. I pretty much hate vegetables in general. I take vitamins so I don’t die, but for the most part I love to eat cheese as much as possible. Beets still = gross in my book, but to each his/her own. Maybe that’s an an idea for an e-book for someone… “how to convert your loved one into a beet eater” I can just see the dollar signs now…
