If you are just starting a small business,
you are thinking about starting a small biz
or you already own a small business and you
are wondering why you started it in the first
place, I hope today’s Tip Sheet will help.
Today’s email is mostly going to be a lot
of personal questions.
These are questions that you need to look at
on a very deep level, to decide if you really
want to be in business in the first place, or
if you are in business, are you in the RIGHT
business for you.
Here are 7 questions that you should ask
yourself before moving forward any further
with your business:
1. Why did you create the business in the
first place (money, more freedom, no boss, etc.)?
2. Is this a business that you are really passionate
about, or is it just something that you thought
would make you a bit of money?
3. Is your family supportive of your business venture
or are you going at this completely alone and against
the grain?
4. Are you willing to handle all of the uncertainty
and non-steady income that comes along with running
your own business, or do you like the sense of
regularity that comes with a 9-5 job?
5. Are you looking for MORE than you are getting
out of your current job or business right now?
6. Do you have really vivid goals for yourself
and are you willing to do whatever it takes to
achieve them?
7. Is your business idea so exciting to you,
that it provides enough happiness to feel the
same way on Sunday night that you feel on Friday
night?
Let’s continue the conversation on the blog.
I’d like to know what you like about the
entrepreneurial process.
What are some of the toughest things that you
have gone through trying to get your business
up and running?
What advice do you have for the other members
to prevent them from making the same mistake
that you did?

Yesterday I was talking to someone about a business they had thought of starting in Egypt – a beach bar. The rationale for doing it would have been that everyday would have been a holiday. So, I think you need to add an 8th item.
Is this really a business or are you just trying to make an excuse to persue a hobby?
Great list. I think knowing why you want the business and having a plan to make that business work, is key.
Great post.
@Matthew,
Yep- you are absolutely right. If the person is just using a business as an excuse to go after a hobby, then there will be almost no hope that it will be successful. The drive and the customers just won’t be there.
