Good morning. In case you celebrated Thanksgiving
over the weekend, I hope you had a great time.
I’m back from a few days off and ready to roll
again with the Underdog Millionaire Tip Sheet.
Today’s posting is all about the attitude of
the advertising for your small business,
specifically the way you position your product
in the mind of the customer.
According to marketing experts, there is a
trend in people’s thinking that changes about
every 40 years (give or take a few).
This is the thought pattern of how people reward
themselves with purchases.
Until very recently (within the last couple years)
the trend has been “me me me!”
This trend was at its peak in the 80′s and Early
90′s when the economy was going crazy.
Now that the economy has tanked, we have swung
back to the “help each other” thought pattern.
This means you might need to re-think the
way you are delivering your marketing message in
your advertisements and sales letters.
If you have been selling a product that you position
as a status increasing item, or something that will
make the person stand out from everyone else, even
something that will show people that your are
better than them, well you might need to re-think
the ad.
I’m not talking about changing the product in any
way, just the way you position it in the customer’s
mind.
Right now people are in a mode of “coming together”
to help the greater good so your product needs to
show how that purchase will achieve that mindset.
For example:
If you sold shampoo…
For the last 40 years you will talk about how great
the person will look and how they will be the envy
of their friends with their new beauty.
The new way would be to show the person helping out
in their community, feeding starving kids, getting
their hair all dirty during a community event and
then coming home and being able to still look
beautiful with ACME Shampoo.
Interesting huh?
Try it with your business, you might turn things
around in your advertising.
