The World’s oldest shoe was recently discovered, clocking in at over 5,000 years old.
It is a splendid piece of craftsmanship,
filled with straw, made of one piece of
laced-up leather, looking like something
that would last about 5 minutes if you
tried to walk around in it.
…but beyond the historic value of this
well-crafted piece of footwear, there is
a small business lesson lurking here as well.
How in the Sam Hill does your business have
anything to a rotten old shoe hiding in a dark
cave somewhere?
You know I’m gonna tell you.
It has to do with trying to knowing one key
fact to consumerism that has stood the test
of time.
One that this shoe magnifies and yells to
the mountaintops.
People don’t like change.
If you come out with a product that is so far
out from what a person experiences in their
daily lives, they will almost instantly reject
it.
There has to be a slow evolution.
You can’t jump from a phonograph to an Ipod.
There would be a revolution in the streets.
You can’t jump from trading chickens and bags of
rice as currency, straight to Paypal.
You can’t jump from walking straight to flying.
You can’t take a brick-and-mortar business
straight to a virtual, online business overnight.
…and apparently we are still not ready for
much of a change in footwear at all, since
this nasty, ancient shoe looks pretty close
to the ones we still wear.
People don’t like change.
So the next time you are plotting your next
super-awesome, top secret project in your
basement lab, try and think about your end
user.
Is this next project something that they can
immediately relate to, something that is not
too far out for their thought pattern?
…or are you introducing a hovercraft to
a caveman?
For those of you that HAVE created a business
and it’s not too close to the next personal
hovercraft, you are going to need to SELL it.
In order to sell it, you are going to need to
get that information in front of your customer
with a sales letter.
The best way to write that sales letter in the
shortest amount of time possible is to use
the Underdog Sales Letter System:

May all of your products be successful, and
may all of your rotten, old shoes stay tied.
Until tomorrow,

HA! That shoe picture is gross or that person had very oddly shaped feet!
Yeah, people don’t like change – no doubt about that. And you are so right about things that are a tiny bit different can be hugely successful. People seem to look at these products as “new” and “the latest thing” even though they are not all that different. This happens in pop culture all of the time. The band Nirvana springs to mind as does all R&B music in the last 30 years.
Anyway, great point! Have a good day!
.-= mark´s last blog ..Innovation’s Last Stand =-.
You have a knack for awesome titles Joshua!’
That’s classic, reminds of a headline (real) in a US paper that read “woman gets knocked out by flying carp while fishing with a bow and arrow” LOL!
You know seriously, you make some really good points here and tied it in perfectly with that thing they called a shoe. SO true about change too!
Thanks for the insight and the entertainment
That’s funny. I saw that shoe on Yahoo! News yesterday.
Joshua,
Great comparison. Some people don’t understand why others can’t adapt to the new age. It is a step-by-step process that takes time for people to understand the new way from the old way.
Thanks for sharing!
