Today on the Underdog Millionaire
I want to chat a little about small
business branding.
Of the course of a business’s lifetime,
a well-branded business will bring in
much more revenue than a non-branded
business.
Why?
Does it really matter if you have a
pretty logo and a great USP?
Yep, you bet it does.
Branding is where your business is positioned
in the mind of the customer.
Branding is the imagery that your customer
pictures in his/her head when they have
a specific problem.
Branding is the way that you look like a
professional, legitimate, business.
Branding is the way that you communicate
your marketing message to your customer no
matter what angle they come at your business.
If you want to kick a whole lot of ass
with your small business, then we are going
to need to start building up your brand.
You can have a personal brand, a corporate
brand, or both.
I use both, for example.
I come at you with my expertise and consulting
by using my name in all of my articles, emails
and blog posts.
However, I also use my little superpig guy
to represent what the Underdog Millionaire
stands for, solid small business advice for
the underdog.
I make sure that my image, my name, and my little
superpig are consistent with every marketing
activity that I perform.
That way, when a customer finds me via web
search, through a product, or from an article,
they will start to recognize the entire
brand for what the Underdog Millionaire stands
for.
You can do this with your own brand.
Is your marketing all over the place?
Does your website promote the image of your
business in the way that you would like it to?
Do you have any idea what your brand image is
to your customer?
Do you want a rock solid POSITION in your
customer’s mind?
It all start with your unique selling proposition.
There is no way around it. You can’t avoid it.
Without a USP, your customers will have a
scattered image of your brand at best.
…at worst they won’t think of you at all
when they have a problem.
How are you going to kick a whole big, bad, bag
of ass this year?
It all starts with your unique selling
proposition and that all starts with the

Hey Joshua,
This is really something I was looking for. I just started to create a new header, opt-in form and possible logo to brand myself.
As I continue to get a ton of traffic, generate leads,
I have not really looked into it. It has only been a thought.
I have to really get it going, doing it on my own, so it has been trial & error so far.
Thanks!!

Joshua,
I branded myself with my landscaping business (KARE) in my community first, then when I created my Internet Marketing business, it only made sense to use my brand online as well.
Another great post!

Anne,
That is a good direction to go, however, you may want to brand each business separately so that you do not water down the brand of each project. Your name is still behind each company/project, but each business will stand on its own that way… just a thought. This is also the trouble that large companies get into when they get into line extension instead of building seperate brands that stand on their own. Good luck in your business success.

Absolutely spot on here Joshua. It’s the one area small business can compete with big business. My business is called The Big Red Tomato Company.
It memorable and it gets people talking. And it’s great when you’re networking because people always want to know about what The Big Red Tomato Company does.

Matthew,
I’ve always thought you had a great name for your company. Definitely a conversation piece.
Hey Joshua,
I’ve been trying to instill branding in everything I’ve been doing. Yeah, we could all do better, but from my blog, to my graphics, even in my videos. I vote with a name or a slogan, stick with it, and build up the brand.
You bring up great points here that anybody building an online brand needs to listen to.
