Small Business Advice From a Junkie?

by Joshua Black

I have a problem. This is something I have
admitted in the past, but in order to
stick my “treatment” I thought that it was
time that I disclosed something again.

You see, I have a serious addiction.

It’s not the standard kind of addiction
that you see on the street corner and in
dark alleys.

…it’s the kind of addiction that stays
hidden from daily life.

I have an addiction to cheese.

Just typing about it makes my mouth water
and my eyes turn a little more yellow.

I just can’t get enough of the stuff. I
always have to have a serious cheese supply
on hand at all times or I go crazy.

I am a perfect customer for a cheese merchant,
because all rational thinking goes out the
window when there’s cheese in site.

I’m like a fat kid in a candy store.

You need to find your proverbial “fat kid;”
your customer that just can get enough of the
stuff that you sell.

Who would that perfect person be? Maybe you
already know exactly who they are. We spend
way too much time chasing around people that
have very little interest in closing the
sale, when we could spend that time more
wisely.

This is the basis for your unique selling
proposition, or USP. This is the statement that
give your customer the biggest promise that
you can make to them.

This is the statement that acts like a magnet
to find that “fat kid” in your market, the
absolute addict for your product.

It doesn’t matter what you sell. There is always
an audience out there that will go crazy if
they can’t get their fix.

It could be a fix of jewelry, landscaping,
motivational speaking, consulting, garage doors,
alarm systems, tattoos, books, vacations, ANYTHING.

…you get the idea.

These people can’t stand another minute without
what you have to sell. All you have to do is
attract them to your business.

It all starts with that USP, the foundation of
your marketing plan. Without it, there will be
no addict at the door.
