Nope, I am not talking about swine flu,
allergies, or a serious case of rhinovirus.

Marketing guru, Seth Godin calls these
people “sneezers” in his book “Unleashing
the Ideavirus.”
Old-school interruption marketing (TV/radio
ads, magazine ads, internet banners) is a
really hard way to get customers, because
of how numb people are to this type of
marketing.
The two best ways to get their attention
is through:
1. Permission
2. Viral marketing
Today is all about the virus.
You see, with viral marketing, you are using
the power of your best cusotmers to spread the
word about your product or service instead
of your own advertising.
This is not as easy as it looks, but in a
nutshell you create a product that is so
amazing that people want to share it with
others.
The people that become your mouthpiece are
called sneezers.
Sneezers are your most valuable customers in
the way that they are vocal about their opinions.
They know a lot of other people that value
their opinion and they are in love with the
product or service that you produce.
Of course it all starts with your original
idea. It helps if you product needs another person
in order to use it (for example, you sell walkie-
talkies- someone’s got to be on the other end to
listen).
You can reward your sneezers by giving them
incentive to spread your message as well as the
prestige that they get by being the first ones
to try something out.
The best way to do this is to control who you
want your sneezers to be and reward them heavily
for sticking with you and passing your message
along.
This whole process is not possible without a
strong foundation, a message that will tell the
customer exactly what your business stands for.
