Ye Old Tip Sheet is all about risk today.
But we are going to copy the ones that
have done it and have made it.
We are going to take CACLULATED risks.
It’s one thing to just go out there like
a crazy person and bet all your money on
one horse so-to-speak, but it’s a whole
new ballgame when you have done your
homework.
Risk is everywhere in business of course.
I mean without a little risk it wouldn’t
be so fun, right?
The idea here is that you know the odds.
…that you can handle it financially if
the risk you take completely goes sour.
…and that you have an advantage before
you even go into the risk.
Just like Gordon Gecko from the movie Wall
Street says, “I only bet on sure things.”
Now good old Gordon was a real scumbag and
his empire ended up crashing down around him
because he was doing a ton of illegal deals,
but his quote is still something we can learn
from.
Know your market.
Know that your customers already want what
you have to sell.
Know that you have a “tollbooth” position
in the market so that you can make a few
small errors and you won’t lose customers.
Know that you have a profitable business
model BEFORE you sink a ton of your life
into a project.
Know that you are not putting your entire
business at risk on one deal.
Know that you are not going to lose your house
if a business partner gets up and leaves on you.
Know that you are not doing anything illegal.
Know that you are chasing a pipe dream and
that you have actual data to back up your plan.
These are the kinds of “sure bets” that
you can take on your business.
This is what the big guys do, so you should
copy them on your way to the top.
On a side note, if you don’t have a stomach
for risk at all, you need to seriously
reconsider owning a business.
Risk is out there every day and the sure
things are not always so sure.
