Positioning- What’s Your Favorite?

Today’s Tip Sheet is all about positioning
your product or service instead of just
competing on price.

Once you enter the world of positioning,
there are some very strong forces at work
that will be very hard to break for your
competition.

First, let me tell you a little story
about two beverage companies that you just
might have heard about some time in your life.

Coke and Pepsi.

Each of these companies performed a taste
test on their products and guess what they
found out?

Coke found out that Coke tasted the best.

Pepsi found out that Pepsi tasted the best.

So… one of them is a dirty liar, right?
Well, not exactly. You see, they each ran
different tests.

Pepsi used a BLIND taste test, while Coke
actually showed the consumers the bottles
and had them take a sip that way.

So, what’s the deal?

Pepsi may taste better when all other
factors are removed, but our customers don’t
operate that way in real life, so it DOESN’T
MATTER that Pepsi tastes better.

The customers have vested emotions into the
choices that they make.

Just think about all of the memories that
Coke customer could have in relation to that
product. Just seeing that red stripe on
the label can affect all kinds of triggers
in the brain- childhood memories, Christmas,
summer time etc.

Our dopamine receptors in the mind work
overtime and provide a pleasure sensation
when we experience memories based on
something we like.

We are pre-wired to WANT to experience
the same thing over and over, because it
feels good to us.

So, when you are trying to position your
own business into some niche in your market,
go for the jugular with your customer’s
emotions.

Don’t just say you have 10 widgets for 5
bucks, or this month you get factory
pricing…

What is that saying to the customer? You
are telling them that there is nothing
behind your product except the price.

Position your business instead. Make them
want to come back to you, because it feels
good.

Be Coke, not Pepsi. We don’t stumble along
through life from blind taste test to blind
taste test, so you shouldn’t operate your
business that way either.
