Not All Free Publicity is Worth the Price

This is a big week for the Underdog Millionaire Blog. Tomorrow we are turning 1 year old. To celebrate, I would like to offer a special “thank you” to all of my loyal readers.

At the end of this post, I have a special offer for you, that won’t cost you a dime… so keep reading all the way through.

To kick off this week of Underdog Millionaire birthday celebration, I want chat about ways that you can self-promote your business without having to spend a penny. After all, I am a pretty frugal guy and I was able to build my whole business on free publicity myself.

To this day, I don’t pay for any advertising. Of course, all advertising has a cost, and you will either pay for it with your time or your money. If you pay for your advertising with time, you are going to need some indicators to make sure you are spending your time wisely

You don’t want to work on something that could waste hours of your time, where you are only generating a handful of leads. After all, your time has a limit. They aren’t making any more of it, so you might want to make sure you’re being productive.

Here are a few ways to test if your free advertising method is worth your time:

  • Make sure that the amount of hours you spend creating the free advertising creates new customers in proportion to the work you are doing. Let’s say your time is worth $50/hr. If you are working on something for 4 hours, you better get back at lest $200 worth of customers or more.
  • Make sure that you are not just doing busy work that is disguised as prospecting. If you spend all of your time on Facebook and Twitter, or tweaking your blog, without a plan, you could be just doing busy work that isn’t bringing in customers.
  • If you can, create free publicity that will have a residual effect. Take article marketing for instance. If you publish an article to the web, it is something the becomes a permanent fixture, something that prospects may stumble upon for years to come, bringing you new traffic.
  • Never forget your current customers- The most expensive customer you can grab is a new customer. Don’t forget that you already have a big bag of people that are currently doing business with you. Keep going back to them and ask what else you can help them with.

Free publicity can be a very valuable asset to your business, and it is a great way for you, the Underdog Millionaire to grow your own business. Just make sure that you are keeping a watchful eye on the effort that you are putting out for the revenue you are getting back.

…now for the cool stuff!

As I said earlier, it’s BIRTHDAY WEEK here are the Underdog Millionaire. The blog is officially 1 year old tomorrow and I want to thank you for coming back almost every day to see what kind of wacky advice I come up with next.

So, instead of getting presents, I’ve decided to GIVE one, in true Underdog Millionaire spirit. Any time this week if you do just two, simple things, I will give you a great gift in return:

  1. All you have to do is make a comment on the blog this week, for example wishing the Underdog Millionaire a happy 1st birthday, or something that you enjoy about the blog, maybe even something you want to see in the future.
  2. Subscribe to the Underdog Millionaire Tip Sheet in the upper left hand corner of your screen.

That’s it. I will then hand-email you a report that contains 10 different techniques that you can use to generate free customer traffic to your business.

This report contains 10 techniques out of the 101 free customer-generating techniques that are contained in my upcoming book Underdog Marketing 101

If you are already on the email list, no problem, just make a comment on the blog and state that you are already a subscriber. Then, after the week is over I will send out the free reports to everyone that signed up.

It’s my way of saying thanks for being there over the past year, so thank you very much! Let’s make the next year even bigger.  So, let’s make some noise! Tweet about birthday week and spread the news.

…stay tuned tomorrow for even more birthday fun.

Until tomorrow,

Joshua Black
