Marketing Lessons From A Lemonade Stand

July 18, 2009 · 0 comments

Awhile ago I wrote about a little girl in
my neighborhood that was running a lemonade
stand, but had no customers.

Well, this week a new sheriff came in town,
and she’s got competition.

…and the competition knows about
advertising.

However, I wish this story had a happy ending
but instead it contains very important
marketing lesson, so I thought I would share
it with you.

The new little girl did advertise, but her
sign was the size of a business envelope
and was written in tiny writing on a
brown paper bag, which was taped to a
stop sign and completely curled up in the
rain.

The ONLY reason I noticed it was that I
had to mow the lawn around the stop sign.

So I leave it there because it makes me
smile…

Too many of us are advertising the way
lemonade baron number two is advertising.

We make a tiny little splash in the
market, with the tiniest crowd in the
tiniest neighborhood.

It goes along with something else that I
read recently, that most small business
owners are NOT afraid of failure as
previously though.

…they are deep-down afraid of success.

What if I actually DO get some customers?

What if my business model actually WORKS?

Then what?

How will my life change?

This is where you’ve got to look inside
yourself and see if you are either
SCREAMING about your business or taping
a little paper bag to a stop sign.

If you have the right mind set and the
right people around you, success can
bring the most amazing life you can
imagine.

It’s time to put on your big-kid
pants and your crash helmet and get out
there and start SCREAMING.

Without customers you have no sales.

Without sales you are running a lemonade
stand on a dead-end street, hoping someone
will come across you by accident.

Your customer ARE out there, they just
might not know about you.

Brainstorm about alternative places that
you can advertise.

Places that you never went before, using
methods that you never used before.

If you’re on-line go off.

If your off-line go on.

If you have gone through the blood, sweat,
and tears of making a business you are
ready for success.

Now get out there and start SCREAMING.

I’ve already got my earplugs in.

See you Monday,
