Yesterday I took a small road trip with
my fiancée and while we were going through
a toll booth I was staring at the back
of the truck in front of me.
Usually the backs of these dirty semis
are good for a laugh or two, because they
tend to have some pretty choice words
finger-painted in the dust on the doors.
…this time it was different.
…this time the OFFENDING statement
was actually printed on the damn truck.
It was the Unique Selling Proposition(USP)
of the trucking company, which read:
“What solutions do we have for you?”
I was so mad at this stupid truck
I was yelling at it out loud.
“Do you have any idea how much money
you are wasting with that statement?”
“How the hell am I supposed to know
what solutions you have for me?”
…and a few others that are a
little more colorful.
You see, this trucking business was
punching itself right in the face with
its marketing message.
Here it has a GIANT free advertising
space that is seen by thousands of people
each day and they basically forgot to tell
anyone what their business really stands for.
This truck’s USP said absolutely nothing.
I don’t even know what business they
were in. It could have been orange juice
or computer parts for all I know.
…don’t follow in the footsteps of these
geniuses. I know that you are better than
that.
Your USP is the single most important step
that you will take in your marketing plan.
Without your USP your business will not
have a unifying message to its customers
and it won’t have a marketing campaign
to stand on.
Your USP is the biggest promise that you
can make to your customer, which also tells
that person exactly what you will do for
them and how your are different than any
other business in your industry.

Wow, that’s really terrible. Maybe in that company’s case USP should stand for “useless selling proposition” since it’s doing them no good. Even something like “We Will Deliver Your Stuff” would be better, lol.
And the real kicker is that they may well work for a Marketing Agency! If they do, they sure didn’t get their money’s worth!
You just gave me a great idea! Advertise your blog on a semi using your finger in the dust. Think of how many people would see that! And nowadays with the internet ready phones you’d be getting a spike in your visitors I bet. “Traffic from Traffic” Feel free to use that buddy, I’m going to…
@Brian,
Great plan! Let’s call it dirt-vertising. Not so great in the rain, but free nonetheless

Joshua, Mate I am mega impressed with what I see here, you really are the underdog millionaire. I mean each and every product here is one of your own creations. Truly inspiring and I think I shall join your mailing list and see what else I can learn. I certainly enjoyed the above conversation. Dirtvertising LOL …brilliant (I know I said this already, but i do like the smell of (nay)pun in the morning)

Thanks a lot for the comment Alex. I do try my best to as entertaining as I can. The first battle with any blog post is to get your reader to take the time to look at it. Same with email. Without a swanky headline, you can get left in the dust.

Would be very interested to talk more with you about your processes for product creation.
