Going to continue with the animal theme
today and talk about another important
psychological issue when it comes to
positioning your business.
…it’s all about self-herding.
Huh?
I mean, you totally understand how people
can be herded into a group using different
marketing techniques, but self herding?
Yep, I said it.
Self-herding is when a business owner has
created the right atmosphere for a person
to make the first purchase from their
business.
This first experience will make or break
the impression that the customer will
take away.
Since we have no way to make any assumptions
about something beyond our personal experience,
whatever you get on the first visit is the
impression that will stick, good or bad.
Let’s use an example of coffee.
Let’s say you own an expensive coffee shop
called Starbums. Your coffee is 10x more
expensive than anyone else’s but you have
provided the perfect atmosphere.
When the customer comes into your business
for the first time, they feel great from the
experience.
They took a chance on paying a lot for some
coffee and walked away with an EMOTIONAL
attachment.
The next day, they go out for a cup of
coffee and want to FEEL the same way they
did the previous day.
Sure, they could get free coffee at the office,
or cheaper coffee a block over, but they
want that same experience so they go back
to Starbums to recreate the first experience.
They just got in line behind themselves.
The next day they get in line again, it’s
now three people deep. Each day they do this
they add another “self” to the line, or herd.
You now have a Starbums habit that will be very
hard for another business to break.
Nothing else matters in your customer’s mind
except that they need to re-create those
good FEELINGS. Price has nothing to do with it.
Once inside, it’s much easier for the business
owner to add on a few extra items to make the
sale even larger, because hey, if I buy MORE
stuff I might even feel BETTER.
All of this needs to go into your pricing
strategy for your business.
It doesn’t matter what you sell or what you
do. All business owners can create more profits
for themselves by adding a little emotion
into the experience.
