Feel Like You’re Putting Out an Oil Fire When Operating Your Small Business?

small business oil spill

by Joshua Black

Here we go again… there’s a bunch of
“black gold” floating around in the Golf
of Mexico and it looks like there isn’t
a damn thing that anyone can do about it,
except for light a big ol’ fire!

Do you ever feel like your business is
totally on fire some days?

Do you ever feel like you are pulled in
about 200 different directions, just
because you have to wear so many
entrepreneurial hats?

I know I feel that way sometimes.

I can get really obsessed with stats and
emails, checking them many times each day,
even though I know inside that those are
the things that are not helping my little
oil fire die down.

It’s all about looking at each task that
you are doing and asking the BIG QUESTION:

“Is what I am doing right now making me
money or losing me money?”

It’s that easy.

This is for business of course… don’t
even think about trying to streamline your
family life. That is a sure trip to the dog
house.

“Sorry honey, I can’t held with dinner. It’s
just not making me any money.” Not a chance.

However, you should ask this question to
yourself when you are operating your business
throughout the day.

Is there a customer that is eating up your
time because they are trying to get a discount
for no reason?

Maybe you are spending too much time on the
phone talking to prospects that aren’t going
to buy.

Or, heaven forbid, you read too many emails
or blog posts (you would never skip this one
of course, wink wink).

One super-fabulous way that you can get rid
of a pile of deadbeat customers and spend
more of your time focusing on your best
customers is to take a good, hard look at
your pricing model.

Unless your business is based around deep
discounting, most of the time only 20%
of your customers will be price shoppers,
but those are the people that cause 90%
of your oil fires.

When you RAISE your prices, dumping those
nasty price buyers in the process, not only
will you make more money from the other 80%
of your customers that are coming to you
for reasons like service and quality, but
you will also get more of your most valuable
asset back.

…your time.

So, if you are really interested in doing
less work putting out fires, making more money
in the bank and having a little more free time,
then quit putting out those sticky fires and

I certainly agree that time is our most valuable commodity. I believe pretty soon, someone will develop something by splitting nuclear atoms to allow us to “manipulate” time.
I find it is oftentimes best to write a small list. I’m also in the middle of reading a book called Getting Things Done written by David Allen. It is pure gold and will considerably help me stay focused.

Rock it!

Brandon, yes you are right. That is what owning your own business is all about- time. When you control your own time and your own income it puts you in a very powerful place. David Allen’s book is very good. I have skimmed it in the past, but I know I need to get myself a copy. Thanks for reminding me.

Hi Joshua, I like the analogy of spending time with the family! I can’t see my wife going for that!

David Allen’s book is really good. Well worth the time spent on it!

Really valid point about organisation and the importance of prioritising your time. To put it into the perspective of someone like myself who is only just starting to build their business, I guess the question would be ‘Is what I am currently doing directing me closer to my goal?’ And it works! Quite often I think I am making inroads but when I ask myself this question I find that more often than not the answer is NO and Im actually just watching the oil fire spread – so to speak.
