Last night I saw the movie “The Goods”
starring Jermey Piven as the mercenary
car salesman named Don Ready.
His business is selling cars, and sells
them he does.
Granted, this is FAR from any kind of a
training movie in sales, but it’s got
some valuable lessons in it.
The big lesson is NOT something Don Ready
invented…
In fact it’s much older than that.
From the 1800′s in fact.
It’s a system that was used by a guy
named P.T. Barnum.
You know, like Barnum and Bailey Circus…
Well, good old P.T. was the foremost
expert on getting people to PAY ATTENTION
to what he had to say.
He would create public hoaxes where
something strange would happen, such as
a person found a hundred dollars, and
create an atmosphere where a crowd would
gather to see what was going on.
Once the crowd gathered, Barnum would
pitch his circus act that was coming to
town the next day.
He would have people set up do perform
crazy stunts and all kinds of public
demonstrations just to get a crowd so he
could SELL them once he had their attention.
Don Ready did the same thing when he sold
the cars, having people pounding on the
gates to the dealership.
Well, you can do the same thing too.
…and you don’t have to jump through
fire or stick your head in a lion’s mouth.
All you need to do is create an atmosphere
where you GRAB people’s attention long
enough so that you can talk to them.
If you’re a public speaker or consultant,
maybe you can attend a public speaking
convention or trade show.
Walk around with a crazy hat, or some other
odd-ball thing (parrot on your shoulder) that
will get people to stop in the tracks and
ask you about it…
Then once you have their attention, you
begin the sales process with them.
If you sell a consumer good and you want
to move a ton of it, set up a booth at a fair
or some other public event and create a
big scene, just like the infomercial guys.
Have a show every 20 minutes with a group
of people that are just there to hear your
message of how your product will solve their
problem.
It doesn’t matter what you sell.
These guys make can openers exciting…
This is just another tool in your arsenal
of sales techniques.
Probably not something that you want to use
everyday, but another way to move product
or services.
