The Birthday Roundup-Other Blogs I REALLY Like

Today’s post is going to be the last of the birthday blog posts. I thought I would share a few blogs with you that I think are really going the extra mile.

These guys (and gals) don’t just re-hash the current flavor-of-the-month content that can be seen on many of the blogs out there. Instead, they are hard-hitting, unique business owners that have really developed a niche name for themselves.

Many of these blogs are geared towards small business owners, but not all. I think that if you are going to be a competitive entrepreneur, you really need to look at a variety of sources for inspiration.

Now, I am not going to over-load you with the over 50 different blogs that I try to follow on a regular basis, but I do have a special handful for you that really do something above and beyond.

So, without further adieu, here they are:

Heavy Hitters That Blog About Blogging:

If you have been in the blogging world for any length of time, then you already know about these guys, but if you are just getting started, this is the kind of blogging that you can aspire to.

Problogger- This is a site started by Darren Rowse. He has been blogging for years and has grown his empire to over a million dollars a year, just from blogging, advertising, and selling products.

Entrepreneur’s Journey- This site is run by another Aussie, Yaro Starak. He is a real underdog story, who is now one of the biggest independent bloggers out there, providing TONS of free content and audio interviews from rags-to-riches stories of Internet entrepreneurs all over the world.

Specialists:

This is a group of bloggers that have picked a successful niche and have gained a really solid following, due to the content they provide, the atmosphere they create, and the personality that really comes through in their blogs.

Ittybiz- This is the marketing blog of Naomi Dunford. She has created a cult-like following all based around her razor-sharp personality and her sailor’s mouth. This is not re-hashed marketing advice. Almost every blog post that she writes should be printed out and saved as reference material. Plus, she’s freakin’ hilarious.

The World’s Strongest Librarian- This blog is home to one of the most eclectic guys on the blogging scene. It’s run by Josh Hanagarne, a strong-man/librarian that is also battling with a cure for Tourettes Syndrome. His posts range from spectacular book reviews, to random thoughts, from weight lifting advice, to sage wisdom. Always worth a look on a daily basis.

Men With Pens- This is a site for writers. Not only does this group own their own web design and consulting company, but the frequent posts here offer some really good advice for fine-tuning your writing and improving your value to your market.

ProCopy Tips- This is a copywriting blog that, in my humble opinion is a place that is a hidden gem, discovered by only a few. It’s run by a life-long direct-response copywriter named Dean Rieck. He gives away some great basic copywriting advice and even posts frequently on Copyblogger.

The Simple Dollar- This is a personal finance/money blog by Trent Hamm. He has a cult-like following as well. He covers everything from investing, to debt removal, to bankruptcy and has authored a few books. Great site if you like money at all.

My Friends and Underdogs:

This is a group of up-and-coming bloggers that is really trying to make a difference in their respective markets. They haven’t hit the big time just yet, but I know they will, just based on the content and services they provide. These guys are definitely people to keep and eye on.

Tommy DePietro- This guy is serious business. He runs a MLM marketing advice blog, has a ton of videos and is very passionate about his work. Tommy is really going somewhere. He has been a frequent commenter on the Underdog Millionaire since the beginning.

Alex Whalley- Alex is a really honest guy with a big heart. His blog focuses on keywords, SEO, and niche marketing. His posts are very thorough and he has come a LONG way in a short time.

The Big Red Tomato Company- This is a small business blog run by Matthew Needham. He’s got some great ideas about consulting, small business marketing, and creating information products. Matthew is a real stand-up guy and we occasionally bounce ideas off each other since we are in the same niche.

Josh Garcia- This guy is another one that has slowly grown alongside the Underdog Millionaire. Josh is all about generating leads and giving great marketing advice. Definitely worth a look. You will see his blog comments all over the Internet.

I think that should just about do it. Hope you enjoyed the list. Of course I’m sure I missed a few great blogs out there. Give me the name of someone that you really think is doing an amazing job of creating content?

Happy 1st Birthday Underdog Millionaire Blog-A Year in Re-Cap

Well, today is the FIRSTofficial birthday of the Underdog Millionaire Blog. We’re celebrating all week and I thank everyone for all of the pre-birthday wishes yesterday.

It has been quite a year over here at the Underdog Millionaire. I’ve made a ton of new friends, created some great new products to help you grow your business and sold a ton of those products as well.

5. This was also the past year that we lost a music icon, so I couldn’t leave out a pricing strategy lesson from the King of Pop.

6. From here we learned how to shoot your customers with a Taser and how many small business owners are doing it without even knowing.

7. Here I share with your the single most important technique that I use to help build my business and stay on top of everything that is going on in marketing. I build my empire by enrolling in Automobile University.

8. Now, a re-cap of this past year would not be complete without a few posts about my dog, who as you know, is a total marketing genius.

Customer Research from A True Karate Master

As you may or may not know, I am a martial artist in my spare time. I practice a certain style of Okinawan Karate.

That is pretty irrelevant except for some
of the great wisdom that my teacher
occasionally shares with us.

This latest one is a great tip for
finding exactly what you want from your
customers.

We were teaching a group of children and
one of the kids was particularly noisy that
day.

My teacher asked him “how many ears do you have?”
…kid says “2″

My teacher asks “how many eyes do you have?”
…kid says “2″

My teacher finally asks “how many mouths do you
have?”
…kid says “1, of course”
My teacher then says “then you should always be
watching and listening twice as much as you are
talking”

This is exactly what you should be doing around
your customers. Each time you interact with them,
you have the ability to gain information about
what they like, dislike, and ideas for future
projects.

Instead of just shuffling our feet and hoping
that you can get out of there and go play golf,
try to REALLY listen to what the person is saying.

Maybe your widget has a fatal flaw.

Maybe your customer service needs some tweaking.

Maybe your customer is just dying to tell someone
the greatest, million dollar idea in the world.

…or perhaps you just want to know where you
stand with them and whether or not they are looking
for a new supplier.

You can find out all of this stuff by watching
and listening twice as much as you are talking.

Your customers will think you are wise and you
will gain some really important research intel
in the process.

Bartering-An Underground Way to Get Free Stuff

Yep, it’s a censored word in many circles, so
censored that I couldn’t even print it in the
subject line…

Well, I guess it’s not that censored at all.

But, what if there was a way to legally get all
of the services that you normally have to pay for
in your business?

What if there was a way that you could trade
your craft for the work of others and not have
pull a penny out of your pocket?

What if there was a way that you could do this
and NOT get in trouble with the law?

Well, there is.

Welcome to the world of bartering, a huge, integral
part of the bigger universe of networking.

With bartering, you are going to take a service
that you provide, say it’s lawn care and you
are going to trade it for something that you need,
say it’s legal work.

Now, here’s where it gets really cool.

Maybe the lawyer doesn’t need any lawn care done,
so you give him a credit for a certain dollar
amount worth or lawn care in exchange for his
services.

Now, he can trade that certificate of lawn care
for a different bartered service, or even sell
the certificate for a certain amount of cash.

It’s like a gift card for work at a later date.

Then you will reimburse whomever brings you back
the certificate with that amount of lawn care
eventually.

Yes, this does seem complicated but there are
many different bartering organizations that do
this on a national level.

In fact, I have a local store in my hometown
takes barter credits as payment, kind of like a
debit card.

Yes, this is quite advanced, but it’s a great way
to keep your business moving when you are just
getting started or you are relatively cash poor
and resource rich.

Maybe you own a print ship with some down time.
Now you can literally print cash by doing some barter
work for others.

This works for almost any business and this is only
a piece of all the benefits that you get from
creating or joining a network.

Is Your Castle Vulnerable?

I just got back from my second black belt
test in Nebraska and I’m really energized…

It was a whole week of training for about 8
hours a day, followed by the test on the
last day.

I learned so much this past week my head is
still spinning…

I picked up a ton of martial arts metaphors
that totally apply to small business, so you
will have to bear with me for the next few
days as I proceed to regurgitate them.

Today’s Tip Sheet is all about protecting
your castle.

In martial arts, your main torso is your
castle and your arms and legs are your soldiers.

These guys are meant to take a beating so that
your internal organs remain ok.

Well the same is true for your small business.

Your castle is the livelihood and prosperity
of your business, while your soldiers are your
marketing tools, USP, and customer service.

All of these soldiers go out and take a beating
for the business.

Sometimes they come back victorious and sometimes
they come back with an arrow right in the heart.

That’s why we constantly test, that’s why we NEVER

why we continue to tweak things until they are
