If there is anything that you do for the rest of this year to help your business, print out this email and tape it to your fridge or desk for future reference. That being said, I wanted to give you a few handy-dandy tips to avoid more than touching doorknobs in hospitals.

Since Halloween is coming up, I though I’d give you a few DEADLY mistakes to avoid, and how avoiding those things can mean some serious dinero in return for your biz.

This is a long one, so you might want to come back to it a few times in order to absorb everything.

So here we go…

The 7 Deadly Mistakes of Start-ups and Everyone Else:

1. Not having a Unique Selling Proposition (USP) for your business. If you ignore everything else on this list (and I double you will), you can’t ignore this one. There is so much noise out there, you have to show your prospect how you are the ONLY one that can solve his/her problem.

Your USP will explain EXACTLY what you’ll do for the customer and how you’re the ONLY person around that can solve their problem with very little pain. There is WAAAAAY too much that goes into creating a USP, so I won’t go into that here, but if you want to find out more, you can check out the huge course that I’ve made (the only one of its kind in the world) just on USP creation.

Check it out here: www.ultimateUSPcreator.com

2. Only having one thing to sell. It is your DUTY as a business owner to provide as much of your product or service as possible to the customer, as long as you have something that can improve his condition. If you are holding back products or services from him, you’re actually doing him a disservice.

I’ve got three words for you if you think you’re completely out of ideas: Repackage, Re-purpose, Re-brand.

Some business owners really do have a single product that the entire business is wrapped around. If that’s your case (which is a little dangerous, I might add) you can create information products that you can sell or give away as bonuses to enhance ANY product, physical or digital. Here’s more information on creating powerful information products in just a few hours: www.information-product-report.com

3. Not keeping a database. You need to capture the name and address of every person that’s interested in doing business with you as well as people that are already doing business with you. You have to keep the conversation going. You customers are not sitting at home thinking about your business. You have to CONSTANTLY remind them (in a useful, positive way) that you are still here to serve them.

4. Not contacting old customers. People that have purchased from you in the past are 8% more likely to buy from you than a new prospect. Even if it’s been awhile, stay in touch. You never know where the next purchase will come from.

5. Not practicing what you preach. This is especially true if you’re in a service business… and I will be the first to admit that I even do this from time to time. If you’re going to give your customer advice, make sure that you are already practicing that behavior or using the product that you’re recommending. Otherwise it makes you look non-credible.

6. Not following up AFTER the sale. This is a powerful tip called “locking up the sale.” This really works well with high ticket items and professional services. Although you may not use it if you sell a two dollar widget, you will highly benefit from following up with large sales.

You get these benefits from locking up the sale:

This shows the customer that you still care about them after they pay you.

This will decrease complaints and your return rate.

This helps make the customer like the product more, by having you reiterate the benefits.

This forces you to make sure that you’re only selling the highest quality product.

7. Trading hours for dollars. There is no rule in business that you have to work yourself to death. Look to places in your business where you can automate the process. One of the best place to do this, is through lead generation. Cold calling sucks. Everyone hates doing it and everyone hates receiving it. So instead, multiple your sales efforts through direct marketing.

Direct marketing can take MANY forms, be it through social media, your email list, direct mail, and print advertising. It all starts with getting your sales message out there in print, using solid copywriting. If you want to quickly become a copywriting genius, you can start with my quick start copywriting course. Check it out here: www.sales-letter-system.com and stop trading hours for dollars.

I hope that this list will help you increase your bottom line and make your business life just a little bit easier. Let me know if you need anything.

A little bit ago I asked for your most burning question… you know, that one that keeps you up at night, sweating through your sheets, just hoping it will go away.

Well, I got one back from multiple folks that seems to sum it up quite nicely:

How are you supposed to find out what your customer’s pain is and then where do you find those customers to sell them lots of stuff and get rich?

I wish there was a single, simple answer to that. Then no entrepreneur would have to go through the five gates of hell to try and figure out how to make their idea profitable.

However, since I’ve gone thought those gates a couple times with my own lame-brained ideas, I can give you a few shortcuts on the matter.

Here are 5 tricks that you can use to find your customer’s pain:

1. Use the Google keyword search tool. Just do a Google search for it. It will be number one. Type in the word or phrase that you thinking about turning into a business and you will get all the associated keywords, along with their search frequency, in return.

If you want to use AdWords (gasp!) it will also tell you how much competition there is for each keyword.

It doesn’t matter if you have an on-line business or not, you MUST have a web site, because the phone book is almost dead… (although I did just use one to find someone to cut down a tree that just fell on my house, but I went straight to their website before calling).

2. Survey the customers that you have already… even if there are only four of them. Just like what I did with you. I asked what keeps you up at night, and you told me… now we’re here with this Tip Sheet… see how that works?

3. Improve a HOT idea by just 10%. Facebook wasn’t first by a long-shot. The iPod wasn’t first by a long shot. These are the ones that waited for hot market to develop and then just tweaked the idea and made it better. It’s A LOT easier to improve on something that people are already drooling over like zombies, instead of trying to create a market out of nothing.

4. Ask EVERYONE that you know. Don’t be the person that thinks they have an original idea and refuses to share it with anyone because you think that it might get STOLEN… horse poop I say!

Tell everyone. If you have no business yet and you think you might be onto something, then ask the people that will be straight with you about whether or not your idea sucks. If you see them go from a glazed-over look to a look of “WOW!” then you might be onto something Sherlock.

If you see that look change, then you have found a pain to solve.

5. Get that thing in front of a REAL customer NOW. There will always be a 2.0 and a 3.0 of your business. It’s never going to be perfect, so it’s important to get it out there ASAP to see if people want what your selling.

You can do all the research that you want, but people will eventually vote with their wallets. If they likey then the buyee… if they no likey, well you need to fail fast and get back on the proverbial horse and try another idea until you get one that sticks.

If you have an idea that solves a burning pain for your customer, they will buy it like hotcakes. Solve the pain and they will come.

Products that are a pleasure provider (vacations etc.) can be easily put off until later. Pain, on the other hand, must be solved now, and at almost any cost (aka. the tree on my house).

So, now that you found something that people like, something that cures their pain… how do you go about matching those silly customers with your awesome, game-changing idea?

One word.

Marketing.

That is where I come in. If you opt for a one-hour marketing consult, or one of my other services, I can help you create a way to get new customers and bring them in front of your business, all on an Underdog Millionaire’s budget.

Now, I am not cheap, but the ideas that I will deliver to you on customer-grabbing will be worth much more than the price of admission.

I will create a custom marketing plan for your business that will help you grow in ways that you never thought possible, using techniques where you can compete with the big guys, while keeping a little guy’s (or gal’s) budget.

If you want to find out more about my consulting services, click on the consulting tab at the top of the Underdog Millionaire blog and you will also see a few sample consults as well, where you can steal a few saucy ideas for your own business.

There’s a little bit of funny stuff going on out there.

Don’t you wonder why it’s so hard to get ahead with your small business when it seems like there’s an endless supply of great product/service ideas out there?

The problem with success in small business has a lot more to do with the owner than it does with the product.

Sure you MUST have a product that people want… there is no way getting around that, but that’s one of the easiest parts.

The dirty, sticky, nasty part is the part that most people don’t spend a lot of time contemplating… and that’s following the herd by competing on PRICE.

When I say following the herd, I mean that you, as an Underdog Millionaire small business owner, must be able to step back away from your business for a minute and look at it with fresh eyes.

What are you doing that everyone else is doing and why are you doing it that way?

Here are 3 things that successful small business owners know about marketing that they don’t want YOU to know:

1. Please keep competing on price while I wait for you to run your business into the ground-

Companies that offer a low price as a marketing advantage will end up racing their competition to the bottom.

There will ALWAYS be someone else that can eventually charge a lower price than you… and that might be someone with bigger pockets that’s willing to take a loss in the short run while you go out of business.

Find out how you can create more growth with fewer customers and fewer headaches here: www.product-pricing-strategy.com

2. Show your customers that you’re selling a commodity and that you have nothing else to offer them, while I market only the unique traits of my product and sell for a high profit-

Commodities are things like gas and toilet paper. People could care less about any other trait of the product besides the price. Are you wiping the proverbial bum of your business with all your profits by positioning your product like a commodity?

Commodity businesses happen because the owner cannot find the benefits of the product beyond just a low price.

If you focus on the unique, beneficial traits of your business, you’ll find that you can charge a premium while everyone else scrambles for the bottom feeders.

If you want to know a ton of other ways that you can position your business and sell your product, without having to touch price at all, then check out this course: www.product-pricing-strategy.com

3. Cater to the lowest, most critical group of your customers while you ignore your most faithful fans-

Price buyers are your lowest level of customer. They maintain no loyalty, will cut you off as soon as something cheaper comes along, and they will tell everyone they know how much they took you to the cleaners.

Price buyers are also the people that will cause you the most stress, will steal from you, and will be the least forgiving, causing you to make the LEAST amount of money possible, while taking the most of your time.

On the flipside, if you shun the price buyer and cater to your loyal fans instead, they will stick with you through thick and thin, paying a premium for your products and services, because they are buying YOU, not just what you’re selling.

If you want to know more ways to get rid of price buyers for good and instead cater to the people that really care about your business, then give this a try: www.product-pricing-strategy.com

If you break your business brain free of the idea that you need to compete head-to-head with every other business out there on price, and instead, weave around them with the fancy footwork of a true Underdog Millionaire, then you can de-stress your life while you’re adding more to your bottom line at the same time.

In your service,

Joshua Black

www.product-pricing-strategy.com

P.S. Try to find 5 things about your product or service that have nothing to do with price, and then pick one of those, where you are the only one in your industry to do so… compete with that one thing and you might be pleasantly surprised.

Let’s get down to “brass tacks” shall we? The economy is starting to fire up again slowly. Businesses are starting to hire again, but wages aren’t going to go anywhere for awhile.

This means that as an Underdog small business owner, you’re gonna have to work twice as hard to get those customers to part with their hard-earned greenbacks.

Here are seven things that you can do to give your marketing a little kick in the pants, and to bring in some more sales in the process… get the paddles ready… CLEAR!

1. Don’t lose a potential customer through the cracks- Data is a powerful thing and if there is any way that you can grab even just a prospect’s email address, then you can follow up with them until they buy. Look at your processes and try to find “holes” where the prospects may be leaking out.

2. Treat the “golden customers” like royalty- Don’t take your top 20% for granted. Give them gifts out of the blue. Hold their hand when they have random questions that might annoy you. These are people that feed you. Give them special treatment and they will keep coming back. Getting new customers is a LOT more expensive than keeping old ones.

3. It’s all about your copy- Everything that you do to engage with your customers is copywriting. From your business cards, to your email messages, to your fliers, to your web site. If you don’t engage and motivate your customers according to their wants and their problems, then you won’t motivate them to buy.

You don’t have to be the best in the world in order to benefit from a good copywriting education. Any small business owner can become much better at creating solid copy that will motivate sales.

In fact, if you’re interested, I’ve got a little copywriting course that I created just with you in mind. You’ll be motivating your customers to make a purchase in no time: www.sales-letter-system.com

4. You have to close the sale- If you don’t ask for the sale, the customer may not ask for you. You’re in business to make money and there is no reason that you should give away the farm.

If you have a customer that’s trying to steamroll you into giving them all kinds of stuff for free (like I just recently went through), just be straight with him and explain that you’d love to do business and explain your fee for that particular task.

If you get a freebie grabber, it’s OK to “fire” them. They’re not going to be a good customer anyway, so don’t waste your time trying to please them.

5. RUN the other direction, FAST! If everyone in your niche is tripping over each other to compete for the same customers in the same manner, then how long do you think before that ugly pyramid comes crashing down like a pile of rookie cheerleaders?

Instead, take the easier route and zig when the others are zagging. Borrow from other industries. Look at the marketing techniques of non-related groups are doing and mirror them.

6. Branch out your business into other niches- One of the best ways to make an AUTOMATED income from your current business, is to teach others how to do the same thing, by writing a e-book.

If you can take your many years of experience and give someone else the tools to learn “how to fish” (so to speak), people will pay top dollar for that information.

Best of all, the more specific your niche, the smaller the competition, and the more money for you. Almost anyone can create an information product (e-book) for their business and once you put in the hours to set it up, the books sell automatically.

I’ve been able to add a bunch of tiny income streams to my business doing the same thing with niche e-books. If you want to find out exactly how I do it, (and at a total STEAL for less than ten bucks, click here: www.information-product-report.com

7. Give BEFORE you can get- I know that I harp on this a lot in the book that you got for becoming a subscriber. There is a rule of reciprocity that takes effect when you genuinely help another person without expecting to get anything in return.

Whether you go above and beyond with helping a new customer, or you give an existing customer “white glove” service even if they didn’t pay for it… they will remember your actions in their subconscious.

The next time that you need “help” (aka. ask for the sale), your customer will be much more inclined to buy from your if you’ve already made the first move and helped them gratis.

OK, that’s about it for me today. Add some comments below and let the rest of the Underdog Millionaire audience know what you’ve been doing to create more customer traffic.

In your service,

I recently received an email from a reader that’s been with us for the past two years. He wrote me a quick note about how much he appreciated the Underdog Millionaire Tip Sheet, but was wondering if I could move away from the retail world for a minute and focus on the business-to-business side of selling things.

My friend (from across the globe) is in the audio-visual and webcasting business and was looking for a way to bring in more biz.

So… instead of just emailing him back, I figured that I would share the answer with the entire audience.

Here’s a little list that may help you bring in some more B2B customers like moths to a candle:

1. Don’t focus on your business, focus on the customer’s WANTS. Whether you’re interviewing them to get this information, or you figure it out through research, go after the customer’s wants with a vengeance and the sale will come naturally.

2. Remind the customer that you’re out there and ready to help them. This is where marketing comes in. Where you’re selling B2B, you need to focus on the needs of the business, while still understanding that there’s a real, breathing person at the other end of each transaction. Create a multi-step marketing campaign using a powerful sales letter. My course at www.sales-letter-system.com can help you.

3. People buy from other people. Even when you’re selling B2B, remember that it’s not the corporation that’s purchasing from you. The owner or manager is making a buying decision based upon the impression that you and you products make upon them.

4. Fake it ’till you make it. You MUST appear to be a successful business owner, even on the very first meeting with your very first client. Your marketing materials must look professional (get someone else to judge this for you since you will be jaded). Your sales pitch must be perfect, and you must appear as though you know what you’re talking about. I’m saying that you should lie, just act as if you’ve been doing this for 15 years, even if you just got started. If you’re not ready yet, don’t go after that first customer with material that looks like it was made by your six-year-old niece.

5. Become an expert on the business that you’re trying to help. Find out everything you can about your customer BEFORE you contact them for the first time. Never ask the question “so…. uhhh… what do you do?” It’s a deal KILLER.

6. Focus on the relationship with the customer, not just slaying them with one, quick sale. I go into this in much more depth in my Underdog Sales Bible, at www.closing-the-sale.com . You’ll want to make sure that you are building a long-term relationship with your audience. This is exactly what I do with the Underdog Millionaire. I don’t want people to just buy one thing and then leave me forever. I want to maintain a relationship with a close group of friends from all over the world and help them succeed with my products and services.

7. Don’t let the customer wipe their feet on you. Free is very important and giving away your services before you expect to get things in return, is important. However, you need to get paid in the end and if you train your customer to get too much for free, then they will eventually assume that you don’t want money for the work that you’re doing. This is one of the reasons why I write so infrequently now.

8. Go into every selling situation as if your life depends on it. Bring your “A-game” each time you meet with a client. You need to make sure that you try your hardest to close each sale. If you act like you don’t care and you’re thinking about what you’re going to have for lunch, the customer will see right through you and won’t trust that you’ll provide them with what they want.

9. If you sell virtually, you have to answer every question that your customer is thinking in their mind. Since you cannot be there, your sales letter and marketing pieces must do all the work for you. Again, www.sales-letter-system.com can help you.

10. Have fun. You have to like what you’re selling. You have to be excited about the work that you’re doing or else your boredom will soak through into your sales message. If you hate your product, get a new one. If you hate your job or your business, change it. You only get one life, so you might as well have as much fun as you can while you’re still breathing. Colonel Sanders started Kentucky Fried Chicken when he was in his 70′s.

Have a great week. Share with the rest of us and let us know your B2B secrets for selling.

Until Tomorrow,

Joshua Black

P.S. If you need any help at all with getting your small business off the ground and creating a marketing program that will bring in new clients like a stampede of cattle, I’ve got 3 spots open for new consulting clients. I guarantee that you will be pleased with the results. Let me know if you’re interested.

The economy is moving along sluggishly. The game has changed, but not completely and not all for the worse.

Ironically, people still want to buy stuff.

People still have hopes and dreams and want solutions to their most burning problems. The BIG elephant in the room, however, is the fact that it’s MUCH harder to acquire a new customer these days.

People are really gun-shy about going with a new supplier, a new service, a new widgit manufaturer, or even a new restaurant during tough times. They like to go with the things they are comfortable with. They like to go with the people that they KNOW they can trust.

So, how can you break into that little “circle of trust” and grab yourself a handful of new customers to get your small business off the ground?

You need a new bag of tricks that you can dig into any time your customer base is getting a little scarce… and I have just the thing for you.

A little while ago, one of my valued customers sent in a completely unsolicited testimonial about my newest book Underdog Marketing 101. I will let him tell you about its value in his own words:

“I just HAD to have a copy of Underdog Marketing 101, and quickly grabbed myself one as soon as it became available . I was fortunate enough to do so while Josh had it packaged with some killer bonuses. Believe me when I say that it’s obscenely under-priced. Just get it. I promise you won’t be disappointed. It’s SO good and slammed full of just plain great ideas that if I could, I’d go to bat for Josh and let you sell tickets so folks could watch you hit ME in the mouth if you bought it and didn’t like it. The man knows what he’s doing…”

-Wendell

I couldn’t pay money for a more powerful advertisement than that, but I know that you are not here just to let me toot my own horn. You want a few ways that you can generate customers RIGHT NOW.

So, I figured I might as well prove to you that some of this stuff can work. That way you don’t have to take my word for it… or Wendell’s. So, today I’m going to GIVE you two of the methods that are contained inside the Underdog Marketing 101 book, for FREE.

It’s equivalent to getting about $500 worth of advice for nothing… and probably even more, depending on how much your customers are worth to you.

Note: these are in fact two of the actual tips in the book, but they are explained more fully in the paid version. Inside the book you will find 101 different ways that you can attract customers for FREE. Here goes.

FREE Customer Attraction Method Number One-

How to Make Your Business Card Work For You in 7 Steps:

1. Create a card that people won’t want to throw away. It has to look great. It has to be in full color. None of this homemade printing junk. You can print your own business cards for FREE at www.vistaprint.com

2. Use your business card to SELL. It’s a small billboard for your product or service. It’s not just a place to stroke your ego or give out your phone number. Include a selling message.

3. Use BOTH sides of your business card. It’s criminal how many people have a white back on their cards. This is not a notepad. This is the place where you write a tiny sales letter for your company.

4. Create a call to action with your card. Include a coupon code or a special web address for new prospects. Use your card to pre-qualify people, before you waste time with them.

5. Get really creative. Remember, you don’t want them to throw the card away. Print them on wood, on tiny cds, laser engrave them in stainless steel…whatever it takes.

6. Make sure everything is spelled correctly and that your information is right. There is nothing worse than losing a pile of customers because you were an idiot and changed a digit on your phone number.

7. Find the heaviest paper you can get. Think of a business card like a handshake. You want to give your customers a firm, confident handshake. Make sure you give them a hefty business card too, not just these flimsy tissue-like cards that shout “I’m a big wimp and I’m a total milk-toast about my business.”

Note: If you purchase Underdog Marketing 101, you also get a bonus report about how to make your business card worth $500… completely FREE.

FREE Customer Attraction Method Number Two-

Use Your Prospect’s Name:

Your customer’s name is by far the sweetest sound they will ever hear. If you can memorize all of your customers’ names and use them successfully in your marketing material, you can crate an almost-magic magnetic attraction for your product.

Here are 7 great places to use your prospect’s name:

1. When you greet them in person.

2. On every email you send out, even with autoresponders.

3. Every time you call them on the phone.

4. On every invoice you send them for billing. Don’t make it so “corporate.” People are the ones that read them.

5. On the packaging for the free information that the customer requests from you.

6. On every piece of direct mail that leaves your office.

7. Anywhere else you can make a good impression. Put a sign in your lobby that says “ACME Glue Shoppe Welcomes Amy Smith” if you know a prospect is visiting you that day.

Again… there are 101 of these puppies inside the book and none of the techniques will cost you a dime.

Awww… what the heck, here is one more that has NEVER been revealed before right now-

Totally FREE technique NUMBER 3:

The lost wallet

If you have a local business or service, this is a really powerful trick. Order a handful of cheap, plastic wallets online (or use a few worn out ones of your own).

Inside the wallets enclose a REALLY valuable coupon for a free consultation or free product. The coupon needs to make the person want to come to your business.

Drop the wallets in strategic locations near your business.

Good samaritans will pick up the wallet, look inside, and some will take you up on your offer. They might even bring you the wallets back for future use, but don’t worry if they don’t.

There you have it.

A business is not a business without a customer. It’s really hard to pay for customers when you are just getting started, so why not get them for free.

Order your copy today, click here ( or click on the link to the right of the blog).

Have a great weekend,

Got a really powerful story about niche marketing for you Underdogs out there.

I just got off the phone with a good friend of mind last night, and we had a long conversation about developing new markets and how awesome it can be to be the one that is the 800 pound gorilla in the room.

You see, my friend works for a building supply manufacturer as a sales rep/marketing coach. The company that he works with is so powerful in his industry that it’s almost like working for the mob, except that they earned every penny they’re making in a legit way.

One of the quotes of the night that really stuck with me, was that he said “selling is like checkers, but developing a market is chess.”

Think about that for just a second…

With checkers, there is more of a prescribed set of moves. You’ve got the pattern down… my opponent does this and I do that. It’s just like selling, much more predictable and just a few correct answers for each part of the problem.

Developing an entire niche market, on the other hand, is chess. It’s art. It’s the way you get completely slaughtered if you are not thinking 5 steps ahead of the other guy, or trying to make an educated guess as to what your customer will want.

So, here’s the story:

My friend’s company (we’re gonna call it XCo.), whom shall remain nameless, is like the 10,000 pound gorilla in his industry, because they plan their business like a chess game, and operate it like a piece of art.

They are in an industry where the average product pricing strategyis to chop each other at the knees by trying to be the lowest provider of building materials.

Now, XCo. knows better. They develop markets. They know that if they form relationships with their customers instead of just pitching a commodity, they’re going to have something much more powerful than a few good months of selling.

So, what do they do? They become PARTNERS with their customers.

They give their customers all the tools they need in order to sell the product correctly.

XCo. provides the training for the installation of the product, to the business owners that are not skilled in that area.

Last (this is where the 800 pound gorilla runs through the wall like the Kool-Aid man), they tell the business owners that use the competitor’s product that they are going to get there with or without them, because of the way they can offer incentives to every OTHER business around the competition, dominating their market and making their customers rich in the process (due to the high mark-up and low production costs of the product).

“We are going to get there with or without you”

My friend actually said that to a customer the other day… it’s like something straight out of the Sopranos.

So what? You’re probably asking.

What does a multi-billion dollar company have anything to do with the little, tiny operation I’m running at my kitchen table in my underwear?

It’s got a lot more to do with you than you’d think. In fact, if you aren’t treating your business like a chess game, then there’s a good chance that you are going to be eaten by that 800 pound gorilla climbing up the side of the building after you.

How to Develop YOUR Niche Market Like a Chess Game:

Know where you want to go BEFORE you start moving.

Predict the moves that your competition is going to make.

Predict the moves that your customer is going to make.

Make calculated moves with everything you do.

KNOW and operate your business with the big picture in mind, not just the quick sale.

As soon as you see an opportunity, you take it NOW. You never wait and see.

It doesn’t really matter if you’re selling knitted sock monkeys on eBay, you’re installing garage doors, or you’ve got a billion dollar building supply company. The business principles are the same.

800 Pound Gorilla Principles:

1. You create RELATIONSHIPS with your customers instead of competing on price.

2. You develop a NICHE MARKETthat services a very specific starving crowd.

3. You DOMINATE that tiny niche market with the best product you can create.

4. You keep offering new products to your niche customers as long as they live.

5. You never let your guard down, so you don’t lose the empire that you’ve created.

6. You position yourself so firmly in your market that in order to remove you it will be like taking a bag of M & Ms away from a fat kid.

…but, I don’t have much competition. I just make sock monkeys. Why in the hell should I care about dominating anything? Who would want to run me out of business? That seems kind of mean.

It doesn’t matter if you’re selling to a niche of 20 people. You’re doing this to provide yourself (and your family) with a better life, right?

If you don’t serve your niche with the superhuman service and rock-star quality, someone else will, right?

…so why not YOU!

Have a great week.

Let me know how I can help your business grow… it just might be time for a little consultation.

In your service,

Joshua Black

P.S. I’m getting married on Saturday, so my post later on this week (probably thursday) is going to be it for a little while, so me and the old lady can enjoy our new lives togther on our honeymoon.

First, before we get started to attract more customers today I wanted to let you know that I’m slowing down the frequency of the publication for the Tip Sheet. Instead of trying to pound one of these babies out each morning, I’ll only be sending about one or two a week instead.

That being said, the posts will be longer and even MORE valuable so that you can go back to them a few times during the week when I’m not sending you anything… working on QUALITY over quantity. Enjoy.

Do you make this same mistake that I’ve been making?

In the past, I made a grave mistake with my marketing tactics. It was a mistake that cost me dearly in the beginning, and frankly, it’s something that I’ll have to carry around in my business for a long time because of it.

I made an assumption about my customers.

Instead of allowing my customers to think any way they want, I thought they were just like me.

I thought my customers behaved just like me and thought just like me…

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

In fact, you’re NEVER your own customer. Customer modeling is a great way to try and get in the mind of the person that you’re trying to market towards, don’t get me wrong.

However, the grave mistake that I made was that I was using myself as the model (I no longer do this, but I used to).

I would write sales letters to myself and think of how smart I was. I would write things that appealed to me, as if I were my perfect customer.

Wow, was I wrong.

This is so important that I will repeat it again… You’re NEVER your own client. That’s critical Underdog Millionaire point #1.

Not too long ago, I wrote a blog post for one of the top freelancing blogs in the world, Men With Pens. There, I explained how to find what your customers are REALLY looking for.

I’ll embellish even more here.

You see, your customer is a sneaky, little character. She may tell you wonderful things, give you powerful insight into her buying habits, tell you that you have the best stuff on earth… but in the end may NEVER buy a thing.

Here’s critical Underdog Millionaire point #2: There is a HUGE difference between what people LIKE and what they actually BUY.

When you want to attract customers to your business, you have to show them that you have what they want to buy. You have to go for the REAL reason that they are coming to you, NOT the reason that is coming out of their mouths.

People don’t buy shampoo to fix their spilt ends and give their hair more volume and bounce. They buy the stuff because they want to FEEL sexy. They want to be attractive to other people.

…but they will NEVER tell you that.

That’s the point I’m trying to make. When you are developing your next product or service you have to get to the REAL reason why people are buying from you.

Not the reason that YOU think they’re buying from you.

Not the reason that they SAY they’re buying from you.

I know this sounds a little tough to swallow, but it’s the dead-honest truth. Your customers will lie to you, but they don’t mean to. It’s the way that we’re wired.

We buy on emotion and rationalize the purchase later with logic.

If you want to attract more customers to your business, then it would probably be in your best interest to adopt this policy. Make sure that you are going after the REAL reason that they would come to you.

Example: A customer comes in your store and asks if you have a can of green paint. You can either hand them the can, thinking you solved their problem, or you can dig a little deeper.

The REAL reason that the customer came to you, is because their child was not sleeping well and though the color would help. Once you find this out you can come up with REAL product solutions to solve this customer’s problem perfectly.

The customer comes to you with the emotions of worry and anxiety for the health of the child. Appeal to those emotions and everyone wins.

If you want to attract more customers into your business, I have written a book that explains 101 FREE ways that you can get more customers… without spending a dime more that you already are.

It’s called Underdog Marketing 101, and we happen to be nearing the end of the launch week. I’ve added a big pile of bonuses for people that have the decision-making ability to pull the trigger now.

After September 19th, the extra bonuses are GONE… and they alone are worth way MORE that the 27 bucks that you’ll pay for the book.

Check it out here: http://www.attract-customers.com

Before I say a single word more, I want to send a huge “thank you” to Alex Whalley over at http://alexwhalley.com It never ceases to amaze me, how generous bloggers can be to each other. If you ever have a question about keyword optimization, or internet traffic Alex is your guy! He really de-bunked a big traffic dilemma that I was having.

Ok, now on with the show.

In today’s Tip Sheet I want to give you a hidden secret to attract customers to your business. This is a secret that’s taken straight out of the pages of my latest Underdog Marketing 101 book.

Instead of paraphrasing, I thought that I’d just copy the whole thing out for you and give it to you, for FREE, so here’s your hidden secret for the day:

Coupons

Coupons can be a very powerful tool for the bootstrapper. Here, you will create a discount that has a call to action built-in and it also expires.

Coupons that don’t expire don’t make people get off the couch and into your business. Every coupon you create needs to have a limited-time offer.

9 Free, Awesome Places to Distribute Coupons:

1. Email them to your customers

2. Include them with correspondence, such as when you are mailing a price quote.

3. Include them with each order that you mail out.

4. Hand deliver them door-to-door in you local area.

5. Have them printed on the back of your business cards.

6. Put them up on local bulletin boards

7. If the coupon is very valuable, you can ask other businesses to give them to their customers as thank you gifts, such as a free ice cream cone etc. This benefits both parties and costs you NOTHING.

8. Pass them out at trade shows, public events, concerts, carnivals etc.

9. Include a coupon section on your web page with an email grabber.

In order for a coupon to be successful it has to create a very good deal that is worth the customer’s effort. You need to think BIG to have a successful coupon. BIG is a coupon that is “buy one get one free,” or “50-80% off.” That gets people off the couch

Small coupons, like 10% off your first order won’t do much of anything. Go big or don’t waste your time. The idea with the coupon is to reward a current customer or to snag a brand new customer that you never had before. The only way tot do that is to get their attention with a big offer.

Create a “swipe file” of the copywriting that is being used on the other coupons in your industry. Here, you can get an idea of how successful certain styles and offers are.

If you see the same coupon over and over, then you can probably bet that it is very successful for that business.

Also note that you should use different coupon codes for your different marketing outlets. If you have a flier that you distribute door-to-door, mark that with one code. If you send out an email, use a different code.

This way, you can tabulate all of the different codes when people bring the coupons in for redemption. This will allow you to track which marketing method is the most successful for your business and you can focus more of your efforts on that one.

If you want 100 MORE ways to generate customers for free, click this link. It’s launch week for the new Underdog Marketing 101 book and there’s a big stack of extra bonuses for any customer that purchases the book by September 19th.

After that, the extra bonuses are GONE.

In addition, as promised to all of you affiliate sellers out there, I’ve posted the Underdog Millionaire Affiliate program. I’ve received tons of emails asking for this and now you get your wish. I made it really generous and I’m giving a 50% commission to anyone that sells my book on their site. Without you fellow Underdogs, I could not have created this site.

So tell me… what’s your hidden secret to attract customers to your business?

In your service,

Warning: today’s post is going to be full of bad fish humor and many fishing puns, so watch out and try not to get hooked!

There’s a crazy photo of a giant goldfish flying all over the Internet this week. Apparently this guy just happened to hook this beast in France. Although the photo seems a little suspect, it is possible that the fish is actually real.

So, this little fishy got me thinking…

One of the best ways to get more customers is to attract a really big one right out of the water. I’m sure you’ve heard of the 80/20 principle, eh? You know, the one where 80% of your business comes from 20% of your efforts.

Well my friend, you need to catch yourself a “big fish” as well.

It takes almost as much marketing energy to ”reel in” a large customer as it does your average Joe customer. You need to go through the same steps, bait the line, slowly reel her in, and eventually scoop her up with a big net.

The big difference between that little guppy and the giant marlin is that your big fish has a HUGE “school” of influence. When you land a large customer, or make a new contact with a person of big influence, you a multiplying your voice.

Not only does your business message get echoed from your own platform, but your new-found big-finned friend, is going to tell everyone he knows how great your product/service/solution is (provided that you do an awesome job, of course).

Now, it’s not as easy as just throwing some bait out there and hoping your big fish will bite. These guys will need a little more than that. You will have to TARGET your big fish, using the best techniques and gear that you can find.

You’ve got to find that treasured fishing spot.

You’re going to have to do a little research to make sure that you know where your big fish hangs out, what kind of bait attracts her, and even better, what kinds of things are going to keep her coming back to do more business with you.

You are going to need to give this person (I mean fish) special attention. Whether you give him your cell phone number, or you create special pricing, or perhaps a scaled incentive program, this fish MUST be made to feel as though he is at the front of the school.

Once you’ve got your big fish on the line, you need to exploit that situation to the best of your abilities. Keep in frequent contact with this person. You may even benefit from giving your services away for free, in return for a personal recommendation from him.

These kinds of personal, here-are-the-golden-keys-to-the-castle recommendations can completely shift the sales volume of your business.

So what’s my point?

Sometimes you’re doing the same thing over and over, and not surprisingly, you get the same results and the same customers. If you can get a little uncomfortable for a minute and swim on over to the deep end of the pond, you might just be able to hook yourself a giant influence-er that could change your business for the better.
