Bag of Dog Poop Ignites a Small Business Fire…

underdog small business owner

by Joshua Black

I’ve got a really good one for you today
and it just happened about an hour ago.

…but first I have to tell the story
that leads up to my epiphany.

You see, I have a pretty big yellow lab
and all winter long he did his thing in
the back yard.

Just the other day I finally got around to
finishing cleaning up the damage he left
behind and put it all in a big bag.

This morning is garbage day in my neighborhood,
so I promptly got up and took my bag of
Snickers bars out to the can at the curb.

As I looked down the street at everyone else’s
cans, I noticed something that lit a fire
in my tiny marketing brain.

There are 6 different companies that pick
up trash in my neighborhood… 6!

It’s freakin’ ridiculous.

We have private garbage pick-up in my city
and we pick our own carriers. Each section of
town has their own pick up day, so that
means that 6 different companies drive by
my house Thursday mornings, but only one picks
up the trash.

We even had a new trash company start up this
year. I mean last year we only had a measly 5
companies… wow.

So what in the heck am I getting at, you are
probably asking yourself right now?

Commodity products.

If your product turns into a commodity you
are on a slippery slope to nowhere’s-ville.

All of these trash companies only compete
on price. They have nothing else to offer.
I don’t even get a free t-shirt or anything just
for signing up.

Therefore, people switch back and forth like
birds in the wind, getting the best price.

…I doubt there will be 6 companies in 2 years
from now. They will all drive each other into
the ground.

If you want to create a LASTING business, you
need to add VALUE to the customer and give a
lot more than just a super low price.

Low pricing will put your business in a coffin.

If you want your product or business to compete
with a lot MORE than just a low price, then you
should check out the Ultimate Pricing Report here:

Until tomorrow,

P.S. What is your dog poop story? Where have
you found that products are turning into a
commodity and watching two or more companies
race to the bottom?

Leave a comment at the bottom of today’s
post. I’d like to hear your story.
