It’s no secret that I am a martial artist,
but I rarely use that practice when giving
business advice.
So, I figured today I would get a little
Zen on you and weave a few secrets from
karate that will help you grow your small
business.
If you are fortunate enough to have a
karate teacher that is a real master, the
lessons extend way beyond just punching
people and learning how to defend yourself.
I am fortunate to have just that teacher,
so I will impart just a slice of that wisdom
today.
The martial arts way extends into the way
you live your life. It’s all the same.
You cannot have one life in battle and
another one at home.
This is a mistake that many people make,
thinking that they have one work life and
one family life.
…it’s all just one life and there are
things that you can do to grow your business
where you are also growing as a person at
the same time.
Here are 3 secrets that can help you grow:
1. When you reach the top (black belt) you
finally have the tools to BEGIN to really
learn about what you don’t know.
In business this is critical. When you start
out, you know nothing and everything is new.
However, once you become successful, that is
the time to really start to focus on the things
that you need to improve upon.
If you are not getting BETTER you are getting
WORSE.
2. The best defense is to not be there at all
when the attack comes.
In business, you need to develop a keen sense
of how to maintain your position so that no
one can take it away from you.
If you are not paying attention, you can drive
your company right into a situation where
your competition will see your weakness and
punch you in the porverbial gut and steal your
lunch money… or your entire business model.
3. The mirror is the best training tool.
In business you need to be able to stand back
and look at yourself with a very critical eye.
You need to be able to focus on the tiny
details where you might be missing something,
or a place where your customer service is lacking.
Every piece of your business is a REFLECTION
of you, so you have to maintain that critical
eye in order to improve and grow.
What do you think?
Were these tips helpful or did I get a little
too “woo woo” for you?
Let me know. I’m here to for you.
Until tomorrow,
Joshua Black

It seems that anything could be potential for business as long as there is a “valuable point” which is offered to customer. Your post about “3 Small Business Growth Secrets From a Karate Master” is an inspiration of making new business. Thank you

I find going for runs helps with business growth. How? Well it relieves all the stress of the business and when you finish and go back to work, you have a much clearer mind and can make much better business decisions.
